The working title, Where There Were Deserts, I Saw Fountains is a line from rock/punk poet/goddess Patti Smith’s classic song “People Have the Power,” as found on her 1988 album Dream of Life. My favorite version, and the one that I listened to so many times while writing that it snuck into the fibers of the novel, is from her set at the 1996 Bridge Concert. She blew me (and everyone else there) away that night. The version below is from a different, later show.
